The company, officially known as Société Renault Frères or simply Renault S.A is a French vehicle manufacturer. The company was established in the year eighteen hundred and ninety nine and began its production line toward the end of the same year. Among its huge line of fleet production, Renault churns out various automobile options that include cars, buses, trucks, vans and tractors. Owing to its association with another auto manufacturer Nissan, Renault is today the fourth largest vehicle manufacturer.

The company headquarters are located in Boulogne-Billancourt, France and it is a privately owned company. It operates in a hundred and eighteen companies all over the globe. Moreover it owns a number of subsidiaries in various parts of the world including the Romanian car manufacturer Automobile Dacia and the South Korean automobile maker Renault Samsung Motors. Renault owns up to ninety nine percent and eighty percent stake in both companies respectively.

Renault’s most unbeaten car model is the Renault Clio which is a supermini, that is, a classification bigger than a city car yet smaller than a small family car. Société Renault Frères was started by a man named Louis Renault, together with two of his brothers Marcel and Fernand and another two of his comrades Thomas Evert and Julian Wyer. In eighteen ninety nine, the company commenced fabrication of the first sedan vehicle, retailing at an average of three thousand francs which would have required the normal worker at the time a period of ten years worth of salaries and wages to accumulate. The new Renault company insignia was launched in nineteen seventy two. It was part and parcel of the of the huge trademark overhaul put into place to concur with the unveiling of the Renault 5 hatchback.

The birth of the popular auto, the Renault, was marked by the primary contribution of one single individual – Louis Renault. On Christmas Eve in 1898, Louis Renault who had a passion for mechanics drove his new car, which was a De Dion-Bouon cycle converted with a universal jointed propeller shaft with three gear speeds. His friends and brother made fun of his invention when he parked it outside.

Taking up the challenge, Louis Renault drove his “Voiturette,” as it was called, down the steep hills of Rue Lepic several times much to the amazement of his friends. His efforts won him an order for the first 12 cars, marking his beginning as an auto maker. It also started a long era of Renault’s list of patents starting with Louis Renault’s universal jointed propeller shaft, which came with a three-gear box including reverse, with the third gear in direct drive.

His car came to be known as Renault Voiturette Type A. In the year 1899, the company, Renault Freres, was formed when Fernand and Marcel Renault joined hands with Louis Renault. When the company started to offer their patented creation to others, the money flowing in from the patent was channeled towards the expansion of the company.

Understanding the role played by racing in the publicity of the car, the Renault brothers started to take active involvement in racing their own creations. Unfortunately, Marcel Renault experienced a tragic death during the 1903 Paris-Madrid race.

In the meantime, the company’s introduced the Type B and the first commercial vehicle, the Type C and the Type K with enhanced features that were capable of driving at a speed of more than 60 kph. This drew a lot of attention from the public…

The year 1902 saw another great brainwave from Louis Renault’s, the “supercharged engine” that paved the way for the company’s entry into the F1 racing in the 1970s.

But it was the Marne Taxi, the first taxi in the history of Paris that made Renault widely known.

Louis Renault was a great visionary who recognized the potential in making a giant step towards aeronautics, diversifying into the production of an aircraft engine in 1907.

After the death of Marcel in 1903, the company came into the sole hands of Louis Renault. In 1908, he renamed the company to the Societe des Automobiles. During World War I, his attention was directed to the production of war vehicles, including the aircraft Avant Renault and the FT17 tank.

Renault went under the control of German administrators during the fall of France during World War II. After the death of Louis Renault in 1944, the company continued its direction in racing with Renault’s turbine-powered Étoile Filante — creating a world speed record that still holds good today by travelling at a speed of 308.9 kph.

Through numerous mergers and acquisitions, innovative design and revolutionary technologies, Renault has continued its saga as a great auto manufacturer, moving into the fourth position after its alliance with Nissan.

This history of the Renault is as vast as that of many vehicle makers. Renault is a French auto maker that has achieved substantial success throughout the years. They make all types of vehicles from cars to vans and even buses and tractors. Right now it is the fourth largest auto maker in the world due in part to their serious affiliation with Nissan. Louis Renault is the founder of the Renault auto maker. He worked with his brothers and friends as his partners as he launched the start of this business in 1898. They split their duties between business management and product development and in no time at all they had started something successful. They allowed him to take the little car for a test drive and he was so impressed with the way it moved and handled the road that he immediately bought it.

Renault continued to grow in success and even though cars were a luxury in the early 1900s, that didn’t stop their sales from doing considerably well. At one point their cheapest cars would cost as much as the average worker made in ten years. Despite this, they continued to make and sell cars as well as buses and other modes of transport. When the war began Renault even branched out to begin making military vehicles like tanks. Renault was honoured for this and had become the number one auto maker by the time the war came to an end.

Many things began to change in the economy after the war. Renault was doing very well but suddenly experienced some issues when it came to regular cars that everyone could afford. This was a market that they were not directly competitive in. It was also a market that was in high demand. Renault produced a line of cars that came in various sizes and engine power levels so that he had something to offer the consumer public.

When World War II began Nazi Germany put a stop to the auto maker’s production. Renault was arrested during the liberation of France and was most likely murdered. Though it was never proven, the coroner noted that his neck had been broken.

It was 1999 when the Renault Company signed a deal with Nissan. It is the very first agreement of its kind. This has helped to keep Renault the high powered company that it has been for more than one hundred years.

The Renault Corporation first began producing cars in 1897. The company has actually been in business far longer, however. Starting in the 1700’s, Renaults have been involved in producing coffee, salt and various other products. The road to the production of motor vehicles actually began with crinoline dress. Renault produced the steel rods used to keep the dresses stiff. Machining these steel rods indirectly led to machining other steel products.

Louis Renault was involved in engineering and design, his two brothers, Marcel and Ferdinand had much experience in management having been involved for many years in their father’s textile plants.

Louis Renault was responsible for the sale of the first Renault car, which he allowed a friend father to drive. The man was so impressed with the capabilities of the car that he bought it on the spot.

At this time, European road racing was in its infancy, but the brothers immediately recognized that road racing could give their cars tremendous amounts of exposure to the public. Louis and Marcel actively participated in driving their cars in these races until Marcel was killed in the 1903 Paris Madrid race. This would end Louis’s racing career as well but the Renault vehicles still actively participated in the races. It was the Renault AK 90CV that won the very first Grand Prix motor racing event.

Because vehicles were considered as luxury items at the time, Renault expanded beyond passenger cars to produce taxis, buses and other types of industrial vehicles. Just as most other manufacturers, Renault turned its attention to the war efforts during World War I producing ammunition, aircraft and tanks. Renault’s military contributions resulted in Louis Renault being honored by the Allies at the end of World War I.

Between the two world wars that the world would see in the twentieth century, Renault began to expand the company to produce both large and small vehicles. However, during this time the company experienced problems with both the stock market and their labor force. One of the most significant problems facing the car company was distribution of their product. Renault was finally able to contract with a distributor in the north of France and things picked up significantly for the company.

In the mid thirties, the trend of shipping back expensive European cars prior to World War I had all but disappeared and imports to the United States dropped almost to zero.

World War II was to be a difficult challenge for Renault Corporation when France fell to the Axis powers in 1940. Nazi took control of Renault’s factories and wanted him to produce military vehicles and ammunition for them. Although Renault refused to assist the Nazi’s in this way, he was still accused of collaborating with the Germans and was arrested in 1944. Unfortunately, he died in prison without ever being able to defend himself against the hideous accusations.

After World War II, the company was lifted on the same wave of opportunity that was sweeping the rest of the world. Renault was revitalized and began producing quality cars that rivaled the likes of Morris Minor and Volkswagen’s Beetle.

By the 1970’s, the energy crisis was affecting all auto manufacturers and Renault was not immune. They used this stressful period to try to gain more success in the United States market. This was only marginally successful and by the mid seventies, the French car company had withdrawn back to its shores across the Atlantic.

Renault, the world famous maker of cars, tractors, buses, vans and lorries, was founded in France in 1899 by Louis Renault along with his brothers Fernand and Marcel. The company was initially called Societe Renault Freres, though what was to be the first Renault vehicle was actually produced a year before the formal formation of the new company. In a bid to court publicity for the new company, the decision was taken to enter motor racing events. Renault enjoyed success in the new sport, but it led to the death of Marcel Renault. Despite the tragedy, the company continued to engage in motor racing. They were part of history when Ferenc Szisz won the first Grand Prix, held in 1906, in a Renault AK 90 CV. That same year Louis Renault took sole charge of the company as failing health forced the other surviving brother Fernand to retire.

Renault had also been making their mark in the fledgling car market. In their first year of operation they launched their first sedan car. However, at FFR3,000 for Renault’s smallest and cheapest car they were very much luxury items. The company also quickly diversified production, rolling out lorries, taxis and buses.

The World War One years, between 1914 and 1918, also saw the company branch out into war production as the company turned its attention to manufacturing ammunition, aeroplanes, lorries and the renowned F-17 tank for the French and allied military. Those efforts saw Louis honoured by the allied nations following their victorious end to the war.

The First World War certainly did not have a detrimental effect on the fortunes of Renault as it emerged as France’s biggest private sector company. They also entered the export market, sending its engines, the Renault 26 hp and 40 hp four-cylinder engine, to the United States.

The re-emergence of peace saw the business diversify further, entering the agricultural and industrial sector by producing machinery. However, on the car production side the company were losing out in its ability to produce cars that were more affordable to the general public though sales at the higher end were growing. Nevertheless they continued to expand their range of cars and 1928 production exceeded 45,000 and included a range of seven different models. And, though exports to the United States had all but dried up, the company was enjoying success in the United Kingdom market.

In the decade prior to the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, Renault produced a range of luxury cars, including the Vivastellas and Grand Renaults. The later were made mainly of aluminium, many of which were scrapped to aid the war effort at the outbreak of hostilities.
